Royal Preston Hospital, Lancashire (On behalf of Vinci Construction)

BDL recently completed Fire Stopping works at Royal Preston Hospital on behalf of our client, Vinci Construction. Upon original inspection, the building had numerous compartmentation issues which were identified via an FRA type 4. BDL were instructed to carry out this £150K project over an 18-month period.

Working from the building drawings, BDL ensured a compliant solution was put in place which was supported by our FIRAS and BM Trada accreditations. The works included a mix of fire stopping, roof works, fire door renewals and remedial works.

A dedicated and experienced Site Manager was appointed to take control of the project for BDL. Liaising with Vinci on a regular basis. Our Site Manager ensured all communication and updates were clear, concise and in the best interest of both parties. By having a dedicated Site Manager, BDL were able to ensure all works undertaken were completed to the highest standard and that the works were completed on time, to budget and with minimal disruptions.

The biggest challenge that this project provided was the nature of the building. Being a live hospital, BDL had to work around this and ensure the programme suited the needs of the service users and staff at the hospital. Although this can be difficult when working to a deadline, BDL prioritised essential works and this allowed us to complete the job in the agreed time frame.

As well as the difficulties that a live hospital pose on a normal basis, this project also had to consider COVID-19 restrictions and the global pandemic. BDL liaised with Vinci on the best course of action to take towards this and a plan was devised to ensure the risks of contracting and spreading the virus were minimised. All staff took daily lateral flow tests and results were recorded before attending site.

This allowed our works to continue and in the event of a positive case, we could ensure this information was communicated at the earliest convenience and replacement labour was put in place. Our pro-active attitude was not only beneficial for the project that we were instructed to carry out but also allowed us to maintain our ethical standpoint and consider those around us.

After successful completion of the project, BDL have built a positive, professional working relationship with Vinci Construction who we value as one of our customers and we look forward to working together on future endeavours.

Carrying out construction works in the Health Care environment is extremely challenging. This means that you have to adapt your working methods/hours etc to suit to reduce the impact upon the primary function of the hospitals.

BDL Fire protection are always happy to do what we need them to, sometimes at extremely short notice to meet the demands of the project. They are extremely professional & reliable and I would certainly recommend the company.
